International deliveries –  how BREXIT will affect you?

A simple guide to explain how you can prepare your business and for International Deliveries post BREXIT

We still don’t quite know how and when BREXIT will actually happen, which makes it very difficult to prepare for what lies ahead.  Needless to say, our government doesn’t know either and as such, you should follow this simple guide to prepare for the worst-case scenario. After all – you will still have to make your International deliveries – or face losing valuable international trade. This guide will help you deliver internationally.

  1. Register as Economic Operator (EORI)

You need to be registered as an Economic Operator to participate in customs procedures when exchanging information with Customs administrators.  An EORI number is an identification number used by traders in all customs procedures to exchange information with Customs administrations -one common type of identification number across the EU, both for economic operators and customs authorities.

To get your EORI number, please follow the EU EORI guidelines found on the EU commission’s website.

  1. Consider becoming AEO certified

Depending on the terms of the post-BREXIT deal between the EU and the UK, it could also be beneficial to become AEO certified for simplification purposes to take advantage of certain easements in customs clearance.

An Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) certification is a concept based on the Customs-to-Business partnership introduced by the World Customs Organisation (WCO). Traders who voluntarily meet a wide range of criteria work in close cooperation with customs authorities to assure the common objective of supply chain security and are entitled to enjoy benefits throughout the EU.

  1. Register as an exporter (REX)

If you wish to benefit from duty-free entry into the EU for products from a specific origin, you should also register as an exporter (REX).

The Registered Exporter System (REX) is the system of certification of origin of goods that applies in the Generalised System of Preference (GSP) of the European Union since 1 January 2017 and which is meant to replace the existing origin certification system under trade agreements between the EU and other countries by June 2020.

It is based on a principle of self-certification by economic operators who will validate so-called statements on origin. If the EU-UK trade after Brexit is based on preferential duty rates, REX certification helps reduce formalities.

  1. Get IT Ready

With Brexit you will have more shipments to customs clear…

Your software systems will need to be designed to help manage your customs processes and settlements with public authorities in every EU member state to:

  • Comply with regulatory requirements
  • Reduce delays and penalties at borders
  • Improve your delivery performance

The great news is, we’ve done that for our clients within Despatchlab – which gives you a little peace of mind in times of uncertainty.

All goods between the UK and EU will be subject to customs clearance.  Exporting from/to the UK will be affected, however it is yet to be determined exactly what the effects might be.

When exporting from the UK to the EU or vice-versa, you will need to provide a Commercial Invoice which outlines the goods you are exporting, as well as their commercial value.  Also, you will need to pay duties based on this Commercial Invoice.  You can produce these Commercial Invoices directly through Despatchlab automatically.

Essentially, trading between EU and the UK post-Brexit is likely to add more complexity and become a time-consuming process.  Delays should be expected, but we will limit these delays through knowledge and guidance.
